In Search of Tostitos

Before going to a football game-watching party Saturday (games shown via Slingbox--no American college football here!), I thought I would buy some tortilla chips to take along. I had seen a bag of Tostitos Hint of Lime chips with the word IMPORT on it in the teacher's lounge, so I figured they would just have to be available somewhere nearby. After checking out local grocery stores Edeka and Lidl (they do have chips, but not from Mexico or the U.S. Southwest), I went to Kleinmarkthalle, an international market that I was told had a little of everything.

the Latin American section

one of the Mediterreanean sections

The place was truly international:  you could get fruits, vegetables, candy, and canned goods from all over the world...well, all over the world, except maybe from the U.S.  There was no good ol' processed American food. No Tex-Mex. I did find some tortillas in the Latin American food section, and even some thick homemade tortilla chips and taco shells, but that's about it.

So, if you are coming to visit, please bring some Tostitos Hint of Lime.  And some salsa. :-)

  1. I must send you a care package soon filled with all sorts of goodies. No Tostitos Hint of Lime is a travesty!

Hope football watching was fun! The game last night nearly killed me :)

  2. Sadly I think you are going to find this is the case. TexMex or true Mexican food are grossly underrepresented in Germany. We are seriously considering a tortilla press.

  3. Oh no! I hope you can find some. I know some stores have sections. If not, why not try:
    http://www.usa-kulinarisch.de/informationen/us-produkte-bestellen/
to see if any of these online shops sell them. The shipping is usually so cheap, and worth it for a treat from home!
BTW, loved your last post too. Always say I'm from Texas, not America, haha. Oh us Texans, always being obnoxious and what not. Love it!

  4. Haha... can totally relate! I had a semi-similar experience in the first few months I was here. I was looking for canned pumpkin because I wanted to make pumpkin bread/pie but I couldn't find it anywhere! They had canned everything-else-in-the-world, but pumpkin, no sir-ie.

Oh well... Germany has enough other stuff I suppose to make up for it. But did you try Karstadt? They generally have some Tex-Mex & "American" products in their food section, overpriced naturally, but I do recall them having some.

  5. @Becky--I didn't get to see that game because it was at 2 o'clock in the morning here, but next week it is an early game! :-)

@ebe--I am planning on doing some learning and shopping over the Christmas break at home!

@Lindsey--I'll have to check it out! Thanks! I'm sure there will be more things I want in the future ;)

@H--I didn't think about Karstadt...I will have to check it out! Thanks!

  6. Edeka always disappoints me yet I never try anywhere new. I'm still desperately trying to figure out how I can shop the grocery store on the US military base in Heidelberg. I'll keep dreaming...

  8. @Alex--there are so many bases around here, and no way (yet!) to get on one!!!

  9. I found your blog while doing research- my company is talking about sending me to Germany for three years, and I've been trying to wrap my brain around the idea of living away from everything I know for that length of time.

    Just wanted to say hello!

(By the way, if you're anywhere near Regensburg, I'll see if I can fit some of those chips in my bag when they send me over to look for housing...)

  10. @steven--there are a few things you'll want to stock up on besides chips and salsa...like vanilla extract, brown sugar, (good) peanut butter...

  11. I know how you feel! I live in Bulgaria and oh how I miss Mexican food so badly. A bag of lousy tortilla chips costs over 5 bucks and I've yet to find decent salsa.

  12. I hate it when you are abroad and you are really craving something from home and you just cant get it. Grrr.

  13. Haha! I bet the international food hall didn't have anything from downunder here in OZ, though!!

Hope you find the snack you crave - or something just as good or even better!!

  15. Oh those really are the best aren't they? I recently just tried their hint of jalapeno. Pretty freaking tasty as well. I'll toast you with a salsa laden chip next time I partake. ;)

  16. @Lauren--the number of expats in Europe who can't get good Tex-Mex is incredible...there is a missed opportunity here for someone to make some money!

@Barb and Kyria--it's so much worse when you KNOW you can't have them!!!

@Red Nomad--you're right! I didn't see anything from down under, either. Maybe English-speaking countries are excluded!

@Lindsey--apparently they are available, but you have to be in the armed forces to get them! :/

@VV--those sounds good, too....Oh, well. What's that old saying, "Good things come to those who wait"?
